Women In STEM NetworkSTEM field: Technology, Engineering

Tanja is the Founder of Sister Analyst an NGO dedicated to developing diversity within the data science and AI community. She is also a Lecturer at the University of Manchester and as such, she teaches statistics within the department of Social Sciences.

Tanja has been involved in higher education for over 20 years and established Sister Analyst 3 years ago. The two endeavors complement each other perfectly.

Her main area of research is in statistical modelling, more specifically the kernel smooth bootstrap method, a formula for assessing the accuracy of a quantile parametric regression function estimate.

As you could expect, she is an ardent advocate of data literacy and skill acquisition, believing that these skills empower people from all walks of life and positions within working environments.

It was a natural choice. I was always fascinated by problem solving tasks and puzzles. When I was introduced to computers and coding it was a logical extension of my pursuits, as well as being fun.

Tanja's message to the young girls is to follow your instincts, be creative in the way you think, nothing should be off limits. STEM can be seen everywhere with a minimum of effort. The intricate engineering that is involved in the creation of a dress for example is not simply a craft or art, it’s engineering and technology. Be nerdy or be an online gamer and if you choose to combine that with fashion design or physics so what?

Create, build, be critical and don’t be limited by sexist stereotypes and thinking.

You can do it!
