The Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) is spearheading a transformative initiative to redefine economic progress beyond traditional GDP metrics. The Beyond GDP conference, scheduled for November 3-4, 2025, in Sarajevo, aims to explore just and green transitions as essential components of resilient and inclusive economic growth.

GDP-centric models often overlook crucial factors such as environmental degradation, social inequality, and long-term sustainability.

The event will bring together policymakers, economists, and sustainability experts to discuss alternative indicators that better reflect economic well-being, environmental sustainability, and social equity. The conference is part of the broader South East Europe 2030 Strategy, which seeks to integrate green transitions and risk resilience into economic measurement frameworks.

Through its call for research papers, the RCC is inviting scholars to contribute insights on redefining economic success.

Contributors are invited to explore topics including, but not limited to:

  • Indicators to measure economic progress beyond GDP, incorporating environmental sustainability, social equity, and well-being.
  • Indicators of regional resilience to shocks and long-term structural change.
  • Frameworks for data collection and measurement at regional and local levels.
  • Application of alternative indicators in public policy development.
  • Connecting indicators with inclusive funding and investment strategies.
  • Stakeholder engagement in co-creating sustainability and resilience metrics.
  • Institutional capacity-building for evidence-based policy.
  • The role of informal economies in inclusive economic measurement.
  • Alternative paradigms such as post-growth economics.

The submission window for abstracts is open from May 19 to August 4, 2025
